WCA Slotfeest | Afrolijk ft. The Burial of Kojo

Op zaterdag 24 augustus host Afrolijk het slotfeest van World Cinema Amsterdam (WCA) in Rialto! Dit keer vindt het feest plaats na de vertoning van de gevierde Ghanese film The Burial Of Kojo. De regisseur, Sam Blitz Bazawule (aka The Ambassador), is die dag aanwezig voor een Q&A. Sterker nog, de dag ervoor, op vrijdag 23 augustus, is Blitz er ook al en hosten we de Nederlandse première van zijn magisch realistische film die eerder in Amerika en Engeland op Netflix werd uitgebracht. Kortom: check ons Afrolijk weekend rondom The Burial Of Kojo, ontmoet Blitz op WCA en join ons afrofeest met DJ Giordan Chase op de slotavond van het festival!

FILM: THE BURIAL OF KOJO (22.00-23.30 uur)
Net verhuisd naar Accra is de vader van Esi illegaal gaan werken in een goudmijn. Maar al na de eerste dag keert hij niet terug. Ze gaat hem zoeken – een wonderbare tocht.
Esi leeft met haar vader en moeder in een dorp aan de Ghanese kust. Maar het is daar moeilijk de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen en daarom besluit haar vader Kojo, op verzoek van zijn broer Kwabena, te verhuizen naar hoofdstad Accra. De relatie tussen die twee is door een vreselijk voorval in het verleden op zijn zachtst gezegd gespannen. Via bemiddeling van een oude vriend gaat Kojo aan de slag als illegaal mijnwerker in een goudmijn, maar al na de eerste dag keert hij niet terug. Esi, die eerder een onheilspellend visioen had, besluit haar vader te gaan zoeken. Het wordt een wonderbare zoektocht.
Regisseur, visueel kunstenaar en rapper Sam Blitz Bazawule (a.k.a. Blitz the Ambassador) vertelt een verhaal dat diep verankerd is in de Ghanese folklore en verhaaltraditie, vol prachtig in beeld gebrachte magisch-realistische wendingen. Hij tekende niet alleen voor de regie, hij schreef voor dit speelfilmdebuut ook zelf het scenario en de score. Het resultaat: een visueel gedicht.

VRIJ 23 AUG: GHANESE DANSBORREL MET DJ MATTEO FAVA
Na de film, rond half twaalf, gaan we in het café-restaurant van Rialto verder met een Ghanese dansborrel met DJ Matteo Fava! Matteo is een Italiaanse selector die werkt in VintageVoudou, een platenzaak in Amsterdam gespecialiseerd in Latijns-Amerikaanse, Caribische en Afrikaanse muziek. Daar heeft hij een liefde ontwikkeld voor wat hij zelf ‘tropical sounds’ noemt. Inmiddels draait hij op verschillende feesten in Amsterdam en is hij regelmatig een van de dj’s op DUB Explorations in Paradiso Amsterdam. Op vrijdag 23 augustus zal hij zijn unieke platencollectie van Afrikaanse en vooral Ghanese muziek meenemen naar Rialto voor een fijne dansborrel (23.30-01.00 uur)!
ZAT 24 AUG: WCA SLOTFEEST / AFROLIJK PARTY MET DJ GIORDAN CHASE
Na de film, rond half twaalf, gaan we in het café-restaurant van Rialto, dan omgedoopt tot club, verder met het Afrolijk slotfeest van WCA met DJ Giordan Chase in the house! Giordan is een Ghanees-Nederlandse DJ uit Amsterdam Zuidoost. Hij begon op zijn 17e met draaien en is sindsdien niet meer weg te denken uit de Nederlandse clubscene. Giordan is onder andere vaste DJ bij AfroLosjes en staat regelmatig op urban festivals als Vunzige Deuntjes, LatinVillage Festival en LUXURIOUS XXL “Summer Vibes”. Inmiddels heeft hij zijn sound gecombineerd met zijn Ghanese roots en draait hij een mix van Afrikaanse muziek en urban music. Deze mix zal hij ook meenemen naar de Rialto op zaterdag 24 augustus, waar hij maar liefst zal draaien van 23.30 tot 03.00 uur!
WCA Closing Party | Afrolijk ft. The Burial of Kojo
On Saturday, August 24th, Afrolijk (‘Afro-joy’) will host the closing party of World Cinema Amsterdam (WCA) in Rialto! The party will take place after the screening of the celebrated Ghanaian film The Burial Of Kojo. The director, Sam Blitz Bazawule (aka The Ambassador), will be present for a Q&A. In fact, the day before, on Friday, August 3rd, Blitz will already be in Amsterdam for the Dutch premiere of his magical realism epic that was previously released on Netflix in the United States and the United Kingdom. In short: check our Afrolijk weekend surrounding The Burial Of Kojo, meet Blitz at WCA and join our afroparty with DJ Giordan Chase at the closing night of the festival!

FILM: THE BURIAL OF KOJO (10-11.30pm)
Shortly after moving to Accra, Esi’s father starts his illegal job in a gold mine. He goes missing the very first day. Esi sets out to find him, embarking on a mystical journey.
Esi and her parents live in a village on the coast of Ghana. Unable to make ends meet and following a request made by his brother Kwabena, Esi’s father Kojo decides to move to the capital, Accra. Due to a terrible past incident the relationship between the brothers is taut, to say the least. Kojo finds work as an illegal miner of goldmines through an old friend, but he goes missing after the first day. Having had an ominous vision earlier, Esi decides to go find her father. She embarks on a mystical search.
Director, visual artist, and rapper Sam Blitz Bazawule (a.k.a. Blitz the Ambassador) tells a story deeply rooted in Ghanaian folklore and storytelling tradition and filled with beautifully portrayed magical-realistic twists. He not only directed his feature debut, but also wrote the screenplay and composed the film’s score, creating a visual poem as a result.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 23: WEST AFRICAN DANCE NIGHT WITH DJ MATTEO FAVA
Following the film, around 11.30pm, we will continue in the cafe-restaurant of Rialto with a Ghanaian and West African dance night with DJ Matteo Fava! Matteo is an Italian selector who works at VintageVoudou, a record store in Amsterdam specialised in Latin Amwrican, Caribbean and African music. Being there he has developed a great love for what he calls ‘tropical sounds’. By now he has deejayed at various parties in Amsterdam and has become a regular DJ at DUB Explorations in Paradiso Amsterdam. On Friday, August 23, he will bring his unique record collection of West African and mainly Ghanaian music to Rialto for this modest dance night (11.30pm-1am)!
SATURDAY, AUGUST 24: WCA X AFROLIJK PARTY WITH DJ GIORDAN CHASE
Following the film, around 11.30pm, we will continue in the cafe-restaurant of Rialto, then transformed into a night club, with the Afrolijk closing party of WCA with DJ Giordan Chase in the house! Giordan is a Ghanaian-Dutch DJ from Amsterdam Southeast. He started to deejay when he was 17 and has made his mark in the Dutch urban club scene ever since. Giordan is resident-DJ at AfroLosjes and regularly performs at urban music festival such as Vunzige Deuntjes, LatinVillage Festival and LUXURIOUS XXL “Summer Vibes”. In the meantime he has combined his sound with his Ghanaian roots, often playing a mix of (West) African and urban music. He will definitely bring this mix to Rialto on Saturday, August 24, where he will control the dance floor from 11.30pm until 3am in the morning!
