Reggae Classics: No Place Like Home: Redux (2019)

On Friday, June 24 at 8pm, during the fifth edition of 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀, we will show the long-lost Jamaican film 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝘅 (2019) in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮! Before this film, which can be seen as the successor to The Harder They Come, we will also screen 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗹: 𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗢𝗱𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘆 (2019, 28′), a short documentary about the making of this fully restored version from 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲. Of course there will also again be Jamaican snacks from 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘁𝗮 and reggae tunes as soon as you enter the theatre.

𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝘅
Perry Henzell’s sequel to The Harder They Come (1972) was missing for more than 25 years, but has now not only been found and restored, but also features new scenes and all the reggae music the late Henzell had always wanted. An earlier version was shown at the International Film Festival Rotterdam – IFFR in 2006, but Henzell, who had just passed away at the age of 70, was not yet satisfied with the result. His daughter, Justine Henzell, has worked with producers David Garonzik and Chris Romano for years on a new version that would please her father. In 2019 the time had come: 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝘅 was ready for its release! After the Dutch premiere at the Marley75 Film Festival in February 2020, we are now showing the film again in Melkweg Cinema. The screening of No Place Like Home: Redux will be preceded by 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗹: 𝗔 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗢𝗱𝘆𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘆 (2019, 28′), a fascinating short documentary about the search, restoration and completion of 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲.

In 1972 Perry Henzell’s The Harder They Come was an introduction to reggae worldwide. For the next eight years, Henzell was busy raising money for his second Jamaican feature film, 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲. He shot that film in the 1970s, but when the New York lab where the footage was stored ceased to exist, the negatives were lost. To Henzell’s delight, they were found years later. Sadly, the Jamaican filmmaker passed away before 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 could be shown to the public.

𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 breathes a wisdom that goes far beyond the simple story (about a producer of commercials who has to track down her star actor who ran away). Reggae also forms the backbone in this second film by Henzell. In addition, the film is full of inventive, raw and sensitive observations of everyday Jamaican life. The film certainly also has a nostalgic side and with its colour, rhythm, music and camera work, it gives an image of a society that has now perhaps disappeared. But in 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 Henzell mainly gives his opinion on globalization, political corruption and racial tensions.

In honour of Jamaica’s 60th anniversary, Melkweg Cinema, Caribbean Creativity and Reggae Rita have joined forces to host a Jamaican night every last Friday of the month! With 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 we commemorate and celebrate ‘Jamaica 60’, the 69th anniversary of the island’s independence. We will program a Jamaican film classic or premiere every month, including authentic Jamaican food from Reggae Rita and of course as much reggae music as possible (from DJs in the theatre to concert in the club). 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 is supported by the Jamaican Embassy and the Jamaica Tourist Board.

​Melkweg Cinema is a film theatre in Amsterdam specifically dedicated to screening music films. Reggae Rita is a Jamaican pop-up restaurant and caterer based in Amsterdam. Caribbean Creativity is a non-profit organization committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond.
