ADE2023: Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall (exclusive preview)

On Sunday, October 22 at 17:00 hrs, Melkweg, in collaboration with Caribbean Creativity, Jamrock and Africadelic, presents an special screening of 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 (2023) during 𝗔𝗗𝗘𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯! Executive produced by 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗴𝘆, this documentary explores the dancehall music scene that reverberated across Brooklyn in the 1980s and 1990s and its ever-present influence on a younger generation. After the sold-out world premiere of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York a few months ago, we can now host an exclusive preview of the film during ADE! Prior to the screening, there will be a panel discussion about the evolution of dancehall in the Netherlands with three prominent plays from the Dutch dancehall scene: dancehall artist 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗯𝘄𝗼𝘆, dancehall DJ 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗸𝗼 and dancehall dancer and choreographer 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗲!

Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall explores the emergence of dancehall in the 1980s and 1990s as Jamaican immigrants brought the music, dancing, and vibes of their home to New York City. Nicknamed the 15th Parish of Jamaica, New York became home to an influential movement that saw dancehall rise alongside hip-hop and eventually spread across the country. Executive produced by Shaggy, this documentary brings in heavy hitters like Sean Paul, Ding Dong, and many more, including Shaggy himself, to tell the story. With never-before-seen archival footage that bridges the journey from Kingston to Brooklyn, this film will delight not just dancehall fans but believers of the power of music to bring people together. Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is the most upfront, influential and educational gathering for electronic music and its industry. Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall onderzoekt de opkomst van dancehall in de jaren tachtig en negentig, toen Jamaicaanse immigranten de muziek, dans en sfeer van hun vaderland naar New York City brachten. New York, bijgenaamd de 15e provincie van Jamaica, werd de thuisbasis van een invloedrijke beweging die dancehall naast hiphop zag opkomen en zich uiteindelijk over het hele land verspreidde. Deze documentaire, geproduceerd door Shaggy, brengt grote namen als Sean Paul, Ding Dong en nog vele anderen, waaronder Shaggy zelf, samen om het verhaal te vertellen.
