Deze zomer organiseert BIRD, in samenwerking met Caribbean Creativity, Africadelic en Pleinbioscoop, een serie buitenluchtvertoningen van muziekdocumentaires in de Garden of BIRD. Op 11 september vertonen we The African Cypher (2011), een award-winning documentaire over street dance in Zuid-Afrika als onderdeel van het gratis Beyond the Beat Outdoor Program!ย

๐ซ๐ข๐๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ฉ๐ญ๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ. As the festivalโs name suggests, Beyond the Beatโs core program and mission revolves around unveiling the hiphop culture in a wider context. Through a multi-disciplinary program โ live performance, dance competitions, panels and film โ weโre looking to provide context on the development of hip-hopโs music, culture and cross-overs over time.
This yearโs overarching theme places focus on the rich music and dance culture of the African continent and its diaspora. The festival is divided in a double concert by none other than UK rapper / visual artist Kojey Radical and a free outdoor program consisting female powerhouses Lynnee Denise, Nikki Tsappos, the dynamic South African documentary The African Cypher, “Stand For Something” All Styles & Afro Dance Battle, an exclusive panel discussion on the topic of inclusivity within the music industry and ending the festival with the videoclip afterparty ‘Golden Age of Hip Hop’. All that right here; in the vibrant city that’s called Rotterdam. The festival ‘Beyond the beat’ is part of Rotterdam Street Culture Weekend and made possible by Rotterdam Festivals.

The African Cypher (2012, 89′) is een ultracoole award-winning documentaire over street dance in Zuid-Afrika. In de townships is dans al lang een spiegel van de gemeenschap, een die allegorische verhalen vertelt die zowel educatief als entertainend zijn. Regisseur Bryan Little gebruikt de energie van diverse dansstijlen, van Isipantsula en Sbhujwa tot Krump en B-boy, en brengt dit op duizelingwekkende wijze in beeld. Misdaad en armoede zijn misschien een uitdagende realiteit in de townships, deze dansers laten zien hoe hun kunst hun leven heeft veranderd – en deze hoop door middel van training en mentoring doorgeven aan jongeren. Naast een duizelingwekkend overzicht van dansers en stijlen, keert Little vaak terug naar een bijzonder duo, de Movers & Shakers, en volgt hen naar ‘Big Dance Competition’. The African Cypher is een unieke filmische ervaring die de lichamelijke en emotionele reis van de danser verkent. Of zoals Tom London, Soweto’s Finest, het zegt: ‘When we dance we find purpose with our bodies…’
