On 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟵 at 𝟭𝟵:𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗿𝘀, 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰, in collaboration with 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 presents a special screening of 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹: 𝗔 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮! In this documentary, Haitian history is presented through an explosion of colour, dance and music, as the country prepares for its legendary carnival.

The film will be introduced by Haitian archaeologist and ethnographer 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 and preceded by two short films about Caribbean carnaval: 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 (2024, 4′) and 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻 (2023, 7′). 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹 is a visually arresting award-winning documentary that is set in the present but tells the rich story of Haiti’s past, as we follow a number of carnival performers in the lead up to and during the annual Jacmel Mardi Gras. These performers relate their own personal histories as well as the stories of their carnival characters, representing moments and people from the distant and not so distant Haitian past. Interwoven with the interviews, testimonies and observational footage, is archive material drawn from a wide variety of sources to enhance our understanding of Haitian history and culture from the time of the indigenous Taino through to the present day.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹
𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 is a short film by Kristof West set on the campus of Utrecht University, where a group of students participate in a mask-making workshop in which they are introduced to Carnival in Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago. The masks featured embody their interpretation of Carnival as a form of resistance against systems of oppression.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻
𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻 a short film about Junkanoo, one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated and spirited carnivals. Being practiced most notably in Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, and Florida, this documentary focuses on Bahamian Junkanoo, hosted over Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The largest Junkanoo celebration takes place on Bay Street, in downtown Nassau, but Bahamians across the 16 islands celebrate this joyful tradition. From colourful costumes to exuberant dance routines, participants spend months preparing for the pageantry of this street parade accompanied by the steady beat of whistles, cowbells, horns, and goatskin drums that starts in the wee hours after midnight.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮, 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰
𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 is a film theatre in Amsterdam specifically dedicated to screening music films. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 is a non-profit cultural organization committed to the programming, promotion and production of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond.𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 is a platform and festival operating from Paradiso Amsterdam that is committed to the programming and promotion of African and African diasporic cultural creativity, diversity and activism in the Netherlands. The annual Africadelic Festival is an ode to the African continent and its worldwide diaspora, and offers a showcase of the cultural wealth and profound influence Afrodescendants have on global culture and society. 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹 is een awardwinnende documentaire die zich in het heden afspeelt, maar het rijke verhaal van het verleden van Haïti vertelt. We volgen een aantal carnavalsartiesten in de aanloop naar en tijdens het jaarlijkse Jacmel Mardi Gras. Deze artiesten vertellen hun eigen persoonlijke geschiedenis en de verhalen van hun carnavalskarakters, die momenten en mensen uit het verre en minder verre Haïtiaanse verleden vertegenwoordigen. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻 een korte film over Junkanoo, een van de meest gevierde en levendige carnavals van het Caribisch gebied, vooral in Jamaica, de Bahama’s, Belize en Florida.
