Reggae Vibrations Film: Sprinter | Melkweg Cinema

Op zaterdag 21 december hosten we een speciale kerstvertoning van Sprinter, de gevierde nieuwe speelfilm van de Jamaicaanse regisseur Storm Saulter. De vertoning vindt plaats in Melkweg Cinema voordat in Melkweg Upstairs de reggae night met Jah Reflection en The LDE Tribute Band losbarst. Mensen met een kaartje voor deze avond kunnen met €3,50 korting naar de film, die voor het eerst in Amsterdam Town wordt vertoond. Seen!

SYNOPSIS

‘Een Jamaicaanse tiener met een instabiele vader en criminele broer hoopt dat een doorbraak als sprintsensatie hem kan herenigen met zijn moeder, die al meer dan tien jaar illegaal in Amerika woont.’

Sprinter vertelt het verhaal van Akeem Sharp (Dale Elliott), een jonge Jamaicaan die op weg is om de volgende sprintsensatie van het eiland te worden. Akeem hoopt dat zijn atletiekcarrière hem uiteindelijk naar Amerika brengt, voor een hereniging met zijn moeder (Lorrain Toussaint, Orange Is the New Black), die al meer dan tien jaar illegaal in de VS werkt om haar familie te ondersteunen. Maar de rijzende sterrenstatus van Akeem wordt bedreigd door problemen thuis: een alcoholistische vader die de afwezigheid van zijn vrouw wegdrinkt en een criminele broer die de carrière van Akeem probeert te gebruiken voor zijn oplichtingspraktijken. Niet alleen moet Akeem tegen zichzelf en iedereen in zijn omgeving bewijzen dat hij succesvol kan worden, ook moet hij de problemen zien te overwinnen die hem van zijn succes kunnen afhouden. Gaat het hem lukken om in Amerika aan een prestigieuze sprintwedstrijd mee te doen en zijn moeder na zijn lange tijd weer te in zijn armen te sluiten?

Sprinter werd in 2017 op locatie gefilmd in Jamaica en Los Angeles en ging vorig jaar in wereldpremière op het African Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami. Daarna deed de film vele internationale film festivals aan en won hij verschillende prijzen. Ook draaide Sprinter in Jamaica, Amerika en Engeland kort in de bioscoop. Omdat de film in Nederland geen distributie leek te krijgen, heeft Caribbean Creativity de vertoningsrechten verworven. De vertoning van Sprinter op zaterdag 21 december markeert, na de Nederlandse première op het Da Bounce Urban Film Festival – DBUFF, de tweede vertoning van de film – en de eerste in de Amsterdamse binnenstad!

“I lost my mother somewhat unexpectedly, and way younger than I thought I would have. While trying to process that loss, I got to thinking about the thousands of children growing up in Jamaica and across the Caribbean without their mothers (or fathers) not because of death, but because of the lack of economic opportunities locally and the need for at least one parent to head north in search of work, oftentimes overstaying their visas and never being able to return home without risking the livelihood of their families. In Jamaica these children are called ‘barrel pickney’, because of the barrels of clothes, food, and other essentials shipped to them from relatives living overseas. Sprinter is the story of a barrel pickney determined to run as fast as he can to reunite his broken family.”
